The story of the Tarantella

Tarantella is a traditional dance of the southern regions that originated in Naples in the early ‘700. It is danced by couple, with tambourines and castanets at rhythm and fast time!
The historical origins associates the birth of the tarantella to the city of Taranto, according to some scholars one of the first centers where this dance spread, in fact the dance is associated to the phenomenon of Apulia tarantism. The name “tarantella” comes from “taranta”, a dialectical term for a poisonous spider, the tarantula, spread in Southern Europe. Legend tells that those who were bitten by a tarantula tended to exaggerated dynamism until they had hysterical crises. At the dance of the tarantella then was attributed a beneficial power because through the insistence of the practice of this dance was expelled, through sweat, poison from the body of the affected person.

Curiosity

There are various types of tarantella in the countries of central and southern Italy and each has its own typicality. The tarantella of Sorrento dates back to the seventeenth century and according to some legends its erotic movements would be served to sirens to wield Ulysses
Many composers have been inspired by the rhythms of southern traditions, among them the most famous is Gioachino Rossini, with La danza.

The instruments of the tarantella

The typical instruments of the tarantella are: the tambourine, the castanets, the mandolin, the accordion, the tricheballacche, the scetavajasse and the putipu. In the Neapolitan dialect when mentioning the tarantella very often is not the folk dance we talked about! The word Tarantella is used in the Neapolitan jargon as a synonym of problem, in reference to a trouble or a annoying situation to be solved! If it happens to hear in the alleys of Naples such expressions as “na tarantell” or “mo facimm e tarantell”, be sure that no one is thinking about having a dance !!
